Guernica must be rescued
Francisco Gor, «Hay que rescatar el Guernica» [Guernica need to be rescued], SP Diario, April, 18, 1968. An article by Francisco Gor published in the newspaper Diario SP which recalls the homage to Pablo Picasso in the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, where the petition was approved for the US government’s delivery of Guernica. The piece includes an interview with José Ignacio Fontes, the editor of the university magazine Abraxas, who reignited the proposal two years after it was put forward and warned of the dangers of the initiative stagnating. Fontes explains that the act sets out to send the highest number of signatures possible to the Ministry of Education and Science, and is, therefore, not only aimed at students and artists but all citizens, and anyone can go to art galleries and bookshops to sign the petition. The article finishes by recalling the origin, meaning and importance of the work, both in the painter’s career and in twentieth-century art. It also includes quotes from the critic and historian José Camón Aznar, as well as Pablo Picasso.
