Public outrage over the My Lai Massacre and its possible cover-up also made US lieutenant William L. Calley, under arrest at the time (and later tried and convicted) for his role in the massacre, part of a media spectacle from December 1969 onwards. So, too, was the face of the recently arrested Charles Manson, the leader of a California-based “family” responsible for the murders of five adults, including a pregnant Sharon Tate in August 1969.
