This first national article to critique the production and use of napalm in the Vietnam War was written by James F. Colaianni, the managing editor of Ramparts. Established in 1962, Ramparts was a well-produced monthly designed, in the words of its first editorial, “as a forum for the mature American Catholic”. Associated with the “New Left”, its radical articles attracted US State surveillance.
