This video begins with Peter Schumann’s Bread and Puppet Theatre. Schumann, who came to the US from Germany in 1961, was a pacifist, sculptor and choreographer who thought that theatre should be as basic as bread. The group became a focal point for people against the Vietnam War who expressed their opposition at rallies and demonstrations, and at events such as Angry Arts Week (New York, January 29 – February 5, 1967).
