Lucy Lippard describes the way that New York’s MoMA displayed Pablo Picasso’s Guernica in the 1960s and why both the painting and the museum became a focal point for anti-Vietnam War protests. She also recalls the activities of the Art Workers’ Coalition (AWC), feminist groups — such as the Ad Hoc Women Artists’ Committee — and aspects of Political Art/Distribution Documentation (PAD/D). Lippard reflects on contemporary art activism in relation to historic precedents from the 1960s onwards.
