“The Massacre at My Lai”

This mass circulation weekly magazine brought a ten-page report with colour photographs, taken by military photographer Ronald L. Haeberle, of the My Lai Massacre to millions of subscribers’ letterboxes some 21 months after it occurred. It was not until readers in their homes reached page 35 that they encountered the horrific account of what their troops were doing in their name on the other side of the globe. Many activist artists, such as Martha Rosler, sought ways to “bring the war home” to the “house beautiful” of consumer-driven USA.
