Reports about US abuse and torture at Abu Ghraib, in 2003, were first made public on CBS News on 28 April 2004 and two days later by Seymour Hersh in The New Yorker magazine. Hersh, famously, was the first to report fully on the 1968 My Lai Massacre in November 1969, and the parallels between the US massacre in Vietnam and US torture in Iraq, as well as the suspicion of a cover-up in both cases, intensified “Stop the War” demonstrations and protests.
