“… A Collage of Indignation”
Max Kozloff was the resident art critic of The Nation, as well as a regular contributor to the influential journal Artforum. He was an anti-war activist and organiser who participated in Angry Arts Week (New York, January 29 – February 5, 1967) and the collective work Collage of Indignation (1967) and with Joyce Kozloff and their baby, they demonstrated in front of Guernica at MoMA with the Art Workers’ Coalition (AWC) and the Guerrilla Art Action Group (GAAG) in January 1970. His review considers what an effective political intervention in the field of imagery would be like. How to avoid criticisms of special pleading? How to invert the specialist rhetoric of contemporary art and the power of its institutions?
